The Guam Department of Education and the Foundation of Public Education announced the semi-finalists and finalists for the 2021 Teacher of the Year award.
Every year, a handful of teachers from all over the island are nominated and selected for this title.
This year, 12 teachers were recognized for their expertise, creativity, and dedication to their students and to their profession.
Out of the 12 semi-finalists, 6 will be competing for the 2021 title.
GDOE Superintendent Jon Fernandez congratulated the finalists, saying if there was ever a time to appreciate our teachers, it truly is during these past 12 months.
The current teacher of the year, Analyn Palugod, an ESL teacher at Adacao Elementary School, has the distinction of having an extended term to 2020. The final round of judging, which involves observations, was unable to be conducted due to schools being closed. She was awarded Guam Teacher of the Year in 2019.
The six finalists for 2021 Guam Teacher of the Year are:
Noshista Benavente-Delgado from George Washington High School;
Vann Peter Libranda from Okkodo High School;
Michelle De Guzman from Liguan Elementary;
Kristine Gianchand from Finegayan Elementary School;
Dr. Benjie Santiago from Agueda Johnston Middle School; and
Ceferino Duarosan from Adacao Elementary School
The virtual presentation to announce Guam’s 2021 Teacher of the Year will be on Sunday, April 25.
