Guam – A fire in Harmon overnight gutted a warehouse along Taitano Road next door to the Mattress Factory off Route 16.
The damage to the interior of the tin structure appears to have been total.
On the scene Saturday morning, Acting Guam Fire Department Spokesman Specialist Philip Camacho said that the blaze broke out about 10:30 pm Friday night. Spot fires were still burning Saturday morning at 7am, he said.
Engine 1, Responder 1, Engine 3, Engine 10 engine 7 and a tanker lent by Andersen Air Force Base were all called in to help contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby businesses in this tightly packed commercial area.
The tin warehouse was divided into 5 separate bays occupied by different businesses. Camacho said the fire initially began in one of the bays, but quickly spread to others. “It became a defensive battle to protect the other businesses,” he said.
Medics 1 and 2 where also called to the scene but there have been no reports of injury.
Specialist Camacho said at least one of the bays in the warehouse appeared to be occupied an automotive shop.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
