The contract for a government program providing free meals to the island’s manamko is under protest.

Basil Foods Industrial Services is protesting the award recommendation in favor of its bid competitor — SH Enterprises — for a bid issued by the GSA for the Elderly Nutrition Program.

In a Nov. 22 letter addressed to the GSA, Basil’s legal counsel, Geri E. Diaz, says SH Enterprise’s award should be revoked and the company disqualified from the bid.

Diaz points out that GSA had previously terminated its contract with SH Enterprises several years ago after the company failed to maintain the proper sanitary rating from Public Health.

Under the elderly nutrition program, hundreds of eligible manamko and their spouses who are not able to leave their homes due to health reasons are provided with one nutritious meal from Monday to Friday.

Another component of the program provides meals to manamko in any of the island’s senior citizen or adult daycare centers.
