According to Bailey, the box requires a series of five tests which last in total around an hour and a half.

Guam – Doctors now have a machine, commonly referred to as a body box that allows them to test for one of Guam’s most prevalent problems, lung disease.

Dr. Jose Gonzales, the Guam regional medical city’s pulmonologist, says that the arrival of the new ‘body box’ will allow doctors to get an approximate reading of a patients lung volume, which leads to accurate diagnoses of pulmonary issues such as asthma or lung disease. The box is available to all residents on Guam, including GMH and Navy patients. According to Chauncey Bailey, GRMC lead therapist, patients from any hospital can come to GRMC to be tested in the body box. According to Bailey, the box requires a series of five tests which last in total around an hour and a half. Dr. Gonzales says COPD, which is mainly caused by cigarette smoking, is a problem on Guam.

“We get flows, if you have reduced flow you might have diseases like asthma or COPD.  Said Dr. Gonzales. “Basically, its just COPD, or constructive pulmonary disease caused by cigarette smoking and we see a lot of that on Guam.”
