The Guam Department of Labor and the Guam Contractors Association kicked off a two-day Industry Forum at the Dusit Thani Guam with TV host and licensed contractor Kayleen McCabe.
The forum coincides with National Apprenticeship Week and features McCabe as its keynote speaker.
McCabe hosted DIY Network’s Rescue Renovation for several seasons.
McCabe, a trades education advocate, spoke about her personal journey and why she chose to work in construction and not in any other industry. McCabe says she comes from a very handy family — her father’s a welder and her mother’s a nurse who once worked here on Guam during the 1960s.
McCabe also shared how respect for careers in construction and trades should be re-established and that another pathway should be offered to those who prefer to go this route.
Every person should be given the option to explore construction and trades, according to McCabe. For this reason, McCabe applauds Guam for incentivizing opportunities for those who prefer to go into these types of industries.
Tomorrow, the forum continues with more sessions on apprenticeship and training.
