GHS/OCD: WW II Japanese Grenades Found in Barrigada Heights

Guam – The Guam Office of Homeland Security and Office of Civil Defense [GHS/OCD] responded to another “found ordnance” call this morning [Thursday] in Barrigada Heights.

GHS/OCD Spokeswoman Dee Cruz reports the call came in at 7:37am reporting that a resident found 2 two hand grenades while picking wood behind his house. The home is located behind the Skilled Nursing Unit in Barrigada Heights.

GPD, GFD and GHS along with the Navy’s Emergency Ordnance Disposal [EOD] unit were all dispatched to the scene.

EOD confirmed the grenades were type 97 and type 99 Japanese hand grenades.  Both were taken away for safe disposal by the EOD team.

There were no evacuations.

GHS/OCD would like to remind the the public that if you do encounter any ordnance found, please leave it in place, stay at a safe distance and call 9-1-1 immediately.

Just yesterday, near the Ordot dump, some employees with the Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division also found an old World War II hand grenade. EOD was also called in on that find and they took the grenade away Cruz says that grenade had a hole in it and was not a threat.
