The Department of Agriculture (DOAG), with the Offices of Senator Clynt Ridgell, Speaker Tina Muna Barnes, and Senator Pedo Terlaje are pleased to announce a Free COVID-19 Pig Hunting Derby that will take place May 30 & 31, 2020.
The derby is an opportunity for Guam’s hunting community to provide food for families in need. It is an approach that aligns with our community values of having compassion for one another and stepping up to help our neighbors when we can.
The derby will feed families, foster familial hunter development, and reduce our nuisance feral pig population.
Derby organizers are working with mayors to distribute the meat to residents within their villages. Pigs will be distributed whole and unprocessed. Safe handling guidelines will be provided to families.
Safety Briefings, as well as registration for those without digital access, will be held Friday May 22 & Friday May 29 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at DOAG in Mangilao. The safety briefings will also be held on the days of the derby. On the days of the hunts, the Derby Check-Out/In station will be open from 4:30 am to 8:00 pm. Hunters without a current license will be issued a Special No-Cost License for the two-day event. Regular hunting licenses will also be available for purchase beginning May 21, 2020 8:00 am – 1:00 pm in the two-story David Limtiaco building.
Hunters, please visit doag.guam.gov under Resources, then Forms to download the registration packet. You may fill out the forms and email signed copies to email@example.com. The packet is also distributed via Whatsapp through hunting groups. Hard copies of completed registration packets may be dropped off to DOAG in the two-story David Limtiaco building.
Community members, please contact your mayor if you are interested in accepting a pig.
Everyone must bring a valid picture ID. A Firearms ID is required if you are hunting with a firearm. Minors need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Please provide identification proof at the time of registration. Masks and social distancing will be enforced at registration, safety briefings, and at the check station.
The 2020 Covid-19 Pig Hunting Derby is funded under the Guam Hunter Education Program, through a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Grant Program.
