The FSM Government has released its first batch of checks from the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program.
Sixty-five checks — with an average payout of around $4,600 — were distributed on July 13 to citizens across the FSM.
The FSM Government hosted a ceremony to celebrate the distribution of the first checks last week.
The government has received more than one thousand applications for the PUA Program and officials are expecting to receive more than 3,000 applications, representing approximately 20 percent of the nation’s formal labor force.
FSM President David Panuelo thanked the U.S. Government for funding the PUA Program. “No person should have to suffer the indignity of hunger, or an income insufficient to take care of their family,” he said.
The PUA program provides temporary financial benefits to individuals whose employment or self-employment has been lost or interrupted as a direct result of COVID-19.
