GCC 3rd annual Link Up event to go virtual

Guam Community College’s 3rd annual Link Up event is going virtual and students will be showing future employers what they have to offer.

Established in 2018, Link Up! has found job opportunities for GCC graduates throughout the years.

Link Up! is a reverse, interactive job fair that has various individuals showcasing to future employers their skills, knowledge, and everything that they have learned as students at Guam Community College.

With COVID-19 protocols still in place, visual communications instructor Nita Cepeda and her husband, marketing instructor Joe Cepeda, wanted to make the first virtual event stand out and help their students.

“So this is what we came up with. The graduates are going to be on campus because everyone has internet issues. Let’s have them pre-record their video, showing what they can do, showing their accomplishments, their work … their best work. But they’re going to introduce it live. So they’ll be live, introduce their video, and come back on to close. At the end of their presentation, there’s a QR code that the employers can scan and it’ll take them to their portfolio, their bio, and everything else about them and they will be available for employers to call, to speak, on their own Xoom meeting or their Google Meet or whatever platform where they can actually talk,” Cepeda said.

Although their main objective is for the students to find employment, the event is also set up to entice high school students to enroll at the community college.

“We have high school instructors … GCC instructors out in the high schools and we’re going to use that as a recruitment drive for them to come to GCC and say, hey, look at all these people that are graduating. This is something that you want to do so let’s listen to them. So that’s our other purpose — to increase our enrollment, particularly to our program,” Cepeda said.

The student-led virtual Link Up! event will be on Friday, April 23rd from 9 am to 12 pm

It will have over 20 graduating students from Accounting, Marketing, Supervision & Management, and Visual Communications.

Interested employers may register for the event. Once registered, there will be a confirmation link sent for the event.
