As tradesmen with years of experience retire or move from the island, Guam has been faced with the dilemma of obtaining and maintaining skilled personnel.

But on Friday, 21 men and women received their certificates of graduation to signal their completion of the first ever Ship Repair Transportation Boot Camp, a training program that was created in partnership with the Guam Community College and the CABRAS Marine Corporation as part of an effort to bolster the island’s workforce.

During the course of 12 weeks, the participants engaged in welding projects, first-aid training, and workplace safety exercises to prepare them for the role of ship repair apprentices and then later, ship repairers.

According to a release, the boot camp was the first of several programs GCC will be developing with other corporate partners.
