The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) is hosting the 2019 Family Engagement Conference entitled “Expanding Literacy & Developing Healthy Habits.”
According to GDOE, the annual event aims to build strong family involvement and also presents strategies to strengthen literacy and develop healthy habits at home.
Approximately 72 families from the Pilot Prekindergarten Program will be in attendance from Finegayan Elementary School, J.Q. San Miguel Elementary School, L.B.J. Elementary School, and Marcial Sablan Elementary School.
“This conference addresses the State Strategic Plan goal of preparing our young children to enter kindergarten ready to learn,” Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum & Instructional Improvement Joe Sanchez said. “Through this conference, we also aim to strengthen the family-school partnerships among school administrators, teachers, families, and our community.”
The conference will discuss topics including expanding literacy, storytelling the local way, developing healthy habits, and nutrition education.
The Family Engagement Conference, in conjunction with the University of Guam (UOG) PIP Office, UOG SNAP-Ed Program, Guam Diabetes Control Coalition, GDOE Food & Nutrition Office, and GDOE CHamoru Studies Division, aims to reach as many families as possible while sharing the importance of family involvement in a child’s early education.
The conference will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UOG School of Business, Room 129. Pilot Prekindergarten families may register their children at the event beginning at 7:30 a.m.
