Guam – Just before their budget hearing set for tomorrow, the Guam Department of Education is requesting thousands of dollars in reimbursements from the FestPac committee.

According to GDOE Deputy Superintendent Chris Anderson, GDOE is requesting about $407-thousand dollars in reimbursements. This dollar amount includes expenses for labor, utilities, maintenance, plumbing, carpentry, and personnel during the period of May 18 to June 10. Anderson says they sent the FestPac committee an initial request on July 1st for a reimbursement total of $133-thousand dollars. However, Anderson explains that they have since amended that request, this time with additional expenses. The FestPac committee meanwhile has not responded to the department yet on whether or not they can reimburse GDOE.

Anderson says, “Mark Mendiola and Rose Ramsey had a chance to meet with our board and the board was able to express to them the importance of trying to recover the cost or the impact to DOE given the limited resources that the department has. They provided a commitment that they’d do their best to to make sure that whatever impact was to DOE, that they would work to try and reimburse those costs. So at this point, we’ve submitted our costs, the impact to DOE. We’re hoping with the amount generated from FestPac, that they’ll be able to provide that money to the department.”

Anderson says if the FestPac committee does not reimburse GDOE for the expenses, they would have to request an additional $407-thousand from the Legislature as part of their budget.
