Today was the first day the Guam Department of Education resumed its free food commodity distribution program. The last time the distribution happened was on June 11 during which thousands of bags and boxes filled with fresh fruit, canned goods, and meat were given away to families in need.

The line at the Tiyan site moved smoothly this morning as dozens of cars made their way towards the baseball field.

Steve Cruz, a supervisor at the Department of Public Works, says that around 7:30 am, some cars from the Dededo site were being re-routed to Tiyan.

“I think our numbers are up at 800, now. And the Dededo site…the flock from there is coming down to Tiyan because they’re almost running out of their food up there,” Cruz said.

Around 35 GDOE and DPW personnel operated the site at Tiyan and Cruz says that they were happy to help.

“Well, it’s good to give back to the community and help them out and help the people that put out this. It’s pretty good for the community,” Cruz said.

The next food commodity distribution will happen on Thursday, July 9th at the Tiyan Upper Baseball Field and the Dededo Farmer’s Market from 6 to 10 in the morning.
