The Guam Department of Labor today ran a special Pandemic Unemployment Assistance batch to pay out cleared claims through Sept. 16. Another $7.1 million of benefits will be disbursed late this week or early next week.
Of the $7.1 million, $5.7 million will be in direct deposits, about $834,000 will be in paper checks and about $587,000 will be in federal withholding taxes. This brings the total amount of unemployment benefits paid to about $432 million.
“This is a special payment we ran for this week as we prepare to disburse the supplemental funds provided by the Lost Wages Act. Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, with the support of FEMA, has given GDOL the green light to proceed with the payment of the LWA without the waiver. My team is working diligently to audit the list of claimants who qualify for the LWA. If everything goes well, we hope to batch the payment on Nov. 24,” said Guam Department of Labor Director David Dell’Isola.
The department previously awaited the president’s signature on a waiver in order to move forward with paying out the federal portion of the LWA.
GDOL aims to pay out all six weeks of this additional money to the tens of thousands who qualify. The LWA was approved via Executive Order by President Donald Trump. It provides qualifying claimants an extra $300 a week of federal money for six weeks, on top of what they receive from PUA.
To qualify for LWA, claimants must receive at least $100 in PUA. Dates covered are weeks ending Aug. 1 to Sept. 5. GDOL anticipates close to 25,000 people will qualify.
The 311 PUA call center and appointment lines will continue to be on pause this week as the staff works on clearing claims for LWA. Applicants may receive a call this week to fix claims or supply additional documents to qualify for the supplement. The deadline to supply this extra information will be Friday, Nov. 20 in order to be included in this coming batch.
