Guam – The Guam Education Board voted unanimously this morning [Monday] to select Jon Fernandez as the new Superintendent of Education.
Fernandez was one of three finalists and the only off-island candidate (though he was born and raised on the island.) The other finalists were: Acting Deputy Superintendent Robert Malay and former Senator and former Department of Mental Health Director Dr. David Shimizu.
Board Members went into executive session to discuss the candidates after they gathered for the special meeting this morning. Shortly after returning the vote was conducted by roll call with all members saying “Aye.”
Fernandez was born and raised on Guam. He is the son of Jon and Gloria Fernandez of Yona. He currently works as the Managing Director for the Federal City Council (Washington DC.) He has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University and a graduate degree in law from Georgetown University Law Center.
Taling Taitano has been serving as the Acting Superintendent of DOE since former Superintendent Nerissa Underwood retired last July and will continue to do so until Fernandez is ready to take the lead.
