GEPA: 15 beaches polluted

The results of 43 samples taken by the Guam Environmental Protection Agency on Dec. 26, 2019, identified that the
following 15 recreational waters were polluted above the accepted bacteriological standards:

Togcha Beach – Cemetery
Adelup Beach Park
Adelup Point Beach (West)
Asan Bay Beach
Tanguisson Beach
Hagatna Bayside Park
Hagatna Channel – Outrigger Ramp
Inarajan Bay
Piti Bay
Talofofo Bay
Dungca’s Beach
East Hagåtña Bay – Trinchera Beach
Naton Beach – Fujita
Ypao Beach
Toguan Bay

GEPA warns that swimming, fishing or playing in these unsafe waters may result in minor illnesses such as sore throats or diarrhea. It may also result in more serious illnesses such as meningitis, encephalitis, or severe gastroenteritis.

Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems have a greater chance of getting sick when they come in contact with contaminated water.

This Recreational Waters Pollution Report was compiled by Guam EPA’s Environmental Monitoring and Analytical Services (EMAS) Division. Guam EPA has performed this community service weekly since 1974.
