Guam – The Guam Education Board has voted to close F.Q. Sanchez Elementary School.
In a decision that came down to the bottom line, money, Board Members voted to transfer the school’s 54 students to Merizo Elementary School during a Board Meeting this morning in the Department of Education Conference Room.
Five members voted in favor of the motion, made by Dr. Anita Borja-Enriquez, three opposed it.
The action followed a decision by the Board last month to keep the school open under the caveat that the budget be re-worked to make it economically feasible. The new budget proposal created by Principal Derrick Santos and DOE Superintendent Dr. Nerissa Underwood cut the budget by about 50% but at a cost Enriquez says would compromise the Educational Value of the school.
“The revised budget would mean we would have to transfer current teachers at the higher pay grade and replace them with lower pay grade teachers and it would mean transfering out the Counselor, Nurse and Librarian,” Enriquez said prior to making the motion to transfer the students.
