Guam -The Office of Senator Dennis Rodriguez confirms that the Governor on Friday afternoon forwarded the names of his nominees to the GMH Board of Directors for confirmation.
The Governor’s decision to send his nominees to the legislature follows approval this morning [Friday] by the Legislature of emergency Bill 127 which repealed the inorganic provisions of an existing law which required nominees to be approved by a nominating council, rather than the Governor.
Bill 127 was approved by a vote of 12 to 2. Only Senators Won Pat and Pangelinan voted against it.
When the Health Committee Chairman introduced Bill 127 yesterday, Rodriguez said he hoped its passage would convince the Governor of the Legislature’s good faith and encourage him to submit the names of the new GMH Board members for confirmation.
The Governor has now done that.
Bill 127 has not yet been signed into law though.
In a statement to PNC News late Friday afternoon, the Governor is quoted as saying: “My chief legal counsel is still reviewing the bill, but I fully intend to sign it into law. We cannot halt progress. I remain committed to the patients at the hospital. This management team, and the Board I have impaneled, will maintain excellence at GMH.
Senator Rodriguez has scheduled a confirmation hearing for the new GMH Board for next Thursday at 5 pm.
The Board however is still scheduled to hold its first meeting next Wednesday night at 6 at GMH.
