Guam – Governor Eddie Baza Calvo made several important appointments today for two important issues on Guam: education and land use.
Guam Education Board
Improving public schools is a top priority of Governor Calvo and Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio. The administration has been working closely with lawmakers and Superintendent Nerissa Underwood on comprehensive plans and initiatives to help students, teachers, administrators, and staff.
By law, Governor Calvo has the authority to appoint three members to the Guam Education Board. Additionally, he is filling two vacancies on the board with appointments:
* Former Governor of Chuuk State, Ansito Walter, PhD
* Paul Pineda, DHum
* May Camacho, MNS, CCC-SLP
* Former Senator Francis Santos
* Barry Mead, Assistant Professor at Guam Community College
“The five people I chose, with their diverse backgrounds and experiences, will create a well-balanced education board,” Governor Calvo said. “But what is most important, is all five know at the end of they day, they are serving Guam’s children.”
As the military buildup progresses, construction, homeownership, and land use issues will become more frequent and more important to solve. Governor Calvo named the heads of five land use agencies today:
* Ed Ordonez has been appointed as the Contractor Licensing Board Executive Director
* Dave Camacho has been appointed as the Guam Ancestral Lands Commission Executive Director
* Former Senator Marcel Camacho has been appointed as the Executive Director for the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority
* Monte Mafnas has been appointed as the Administrative Director for the Chamorro Land Trust Commission
“Ed, Dave, Monte, and Marcel are prepared to take on the challenges presented by this military buildup,” Governor Calvo said. “Land has always been, and always will be more than just a commodity to trade here on Guam. These men are ready to treat Guamanians and our sacred land with the respect they deserve.”
Former Senator Francis Santos brings a wealth of knowledge as a manager and policy maker. He is currently the Associate Administrator at StayWell Insurance Guam. Santos also worked as a manager at the Bank of Guam. He is best known for serving in the Guam Legislature from 1993 to 1998. He holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Management from Seattle University.
Ansito Walter, PhD is a former two-term Governor of Chuuk State. He has been teaching at Colleges and Universities around Micronesia since 1986. Currently, Dr. Walter is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) at the University of Guam, where he has been teaching since 2006. He is a member of a number of university service organizations, which look at expending curriculum and serving students of Chuukese decent. Dr. Walters is also a member of the Guam Charter Schools Policy Board, the Pacific Asia Travel Association, and is a founding member of the Center for Micronesian Empowerment. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from United Sates International University.
Paul Pineda, DHum has been an educator in public and Christian schools for more than a decade. He has been both a teacher and school administrator, giving him important perspectives on how to address the challenges in schools with both the classroom and school office in mind. He is currently the President of Empower, Inc. and is the President of St. Paul Christian Schools. Dr. Pineda is an ordained minister in the General Council of the Assemblies of Guam, and is the Senior Pastor at International Christian Assembly, Guam. He holds a Doctorate of Humanities from West Negros University.
May Camacho, MNS, CCC-SLP has been an educator on Guam since 1986. She has worked as a public school teacher, speech pathologist, and most recently retired as the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education. Camacho has also worked as an adjunct faculty for San Jose State University and as a a clinical supervisor for graduate students in the Communicative Disorders degree program at San Francisco Statue University. She is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association and the Marianas Association of Speech/Hearing Professionals. She holds a Masters of Natural Science Degree in Communication Disorders from Arizona State University and a Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech-Language Pathology.
Barry Mead has spent the last 22 years as a high school teacher and college professor. He is well-known for his involvement in encouraging the development in tourism and hospitality skills for high school students, leading several groups to national championships in the field. Mead worked with the Department of Public Health and Social Services to write the current Rules and Regulations for the Guam Food Health Certificate for food service workers, and wrote the current training program. He is also a former Treasurer for the Guam Tourism Education Council. Mead holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration from Hawaii Pacific College.
Ed Ordonez has been an active part of the business community for more than 20 years. He owned Eddie’s Flea Market in the Harmon Industrial Park from 1985-2000. Ordonez is well-versed in the construction industry, and hes dealt with government contracting regulations as a small-business owner. He is an active member of the Santa Barbara Catholic Church in Dededo, and is a senior member of the Knights of Columbus.
Dave Camacho has spent the past 7 years working at a private land surveying company. Before that he served in the government of Guam for 36 years, with management experience in the Commercial Port, the Guam Police Department, the Department of Public Health and Social Services, and the Attorney General’s Office.
Former Senator Marcel Camacho has been a leader in the private sector and government of Guam for the past 15 years. His wealth of knowledge covers administration, planning, real estate development, construction, and policy making. He has also served as Director of the Guam Contractors Association Board, and helped Guam’s needy as the Salvation Army Board Chairman.
Senator Camacho holds a Bachelors of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management Degree from California Polytechnic University, Pomona.
