Underwood, President of the University of Guam invite the island community to join us on Monday, January 17, 2011, in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we continue to promote service in our island community and celebrate “The Year of Guamanian Service”.

On Monday, January 17th, several events will take place to celebrate the “Year of Guamanian Service” and in honor of Dr. King and his efforts to promote equality, social justice, and opportunity for all. The Guamanian Day of Service will begin with a march from Paseo Loop to the Agana Shopping Center at 8 a.m., followed by a wave at the Nieves Flores Memorial Library Intersection. A commemorative program will follow from 10 a.m. to 12noon, at the Agana Shopping Center, where there will be a presentation of the Governor’s Proclamation, as well as a Legislative Resolution by the 31st Guam Legislature.

“The Year of the Guamanian Service” will raise awareness and encourage participation in the various community service activities organized throughout the year. It will also recognize and honor the individuals and organizations who donate their time, money and effort to create a better life for everyone on Guam. “The Year of Guamanian Service” encourages the island community to support service efforts such as the Island Wide Monthly Days of Service held every 2nd Saturday of the month organized by our government leaders, community partners, and private sectors.

Governor Eddie Baza Calvo and Lieutenant Governor Ray Tenorio will lead by example by launching initiatives that will encourage our people to renew their sense of pride in our island. Make this holiday a day on, not a day off, and join us as we celebrate the Year of Guamanian Service and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by continuing to promote community service and outreach on GUAM!
