Governor Lou Leon Guerrero proclaimed the start of Port Week during a ceremony this morning at the commercial port in Piti.
The governor noted that in recent years the port has taken advantage of millions of dollars in federal aid to make significant upgrades. She said the revised port modernization plan has re-directed funds towards the rehabilitation of revenue generating facilities on the waterfront. She thanked port employees and management for helping to transform the port into a world-class facility.
“When the military buildup was first announced in 2006 many in the community including our federal partners were worried that the port would be the one GovGuam element that would not be ready for the buildup. We have proven them wrong,” the governor said.
The highlight of Port Week will be a celebration on Thursday evening at Government House for port employees.
