Cabras 1 received the DCS upgrade about 3 years ago…according to Cruz, Cabras 2 is up for an upgrade every five years. Thai Power is completing the upgrade. Work started on February 22nd.

Guam – Back in September, PNC brought you the exclusive inside look at Cabras 3 and 4, now PNC gives you an inside loo into Cabras 2, which is down for a major overhaul and has once again put the island wide power system in a vulnerable position.

This is the Cabras generator that is down for maintenance. The giant steam turbine was previously only putting out 40 megawatts of electricity. Plant management says that this was because of old boiler pipes that are currently being replaced. They say once the overhaul is complete, this generator will be capable of 66 megawatts of electricity to a power grid in desperate need. Cabras 2 is the first of many overhauls GPA plans to make to various power plants across the island…according to GPA PIO Art Perez, today marks the 50 percent completion mark of the overhaul, which is scheduled to come back online April 1. But what is being repaired?

Francis Cruz, assistant plant supervisor, says, “We are changing a lot stuff, with digital control and burner management likewise with our boiler upgrades.”

Cruz is talking about updating the controls of the Cabras 2 generator which will go digital. This works better with the distributive control system or DCS. The DCS is a computerized control panel that allows the people working with the generator to better communicate with the control operator inside the office.

“The operators would have to do manual load adjustment, but with the new DCS it will be more automated, the control operator would be able to make adjustments to a computer pad versus manually controlling the boiler,” said Cruz.
