Guam’s power authority has received reports of off-island numbers requesting payment to avoid disconnection.
Guam – The Guam Power Authority is advising customers that it has received notices from two commercial customers that a fraudulent caller is attempting to collect on power bills via an 800 number.
“The fraudulent caller claims to be a GPA Customer Service Representative attempting to collect on outstanding power bills to avoid immediate disconnection of service,” stated Mercy A.F. Castro, Utility Service Administrator, “The call originates from off island via an 800 number – GPA does not utilize any such call prefix nor do our call center operators call on the weekends – GPA only calls customers to advise them of their delinquency and to make payments thru the regular channels; these payments can only be received via phone by the customer calling through our Pay by Phone Center.”
All customers are advised to not provide personal or account information to these individuals or organizations attempting to gain financial account information over the phone. Customers may also report these incidents to the GPA Internal Audit Office hotline at 648-3199 or email at email@example.com.
“When making payment to GPA via our Call Center during operating hours from 7 a.m. through 8 p.m. through local numbers,” remarked Castro, “GPA does not collect over the phone payments via an 800 number or payments in the field – customers should report these incidents to the proper authorities immediately.
