The Guam Power Authority has confirmed receiving multiple reports from GPA customers and island restaurants about receiving a telephone call from an off-island telephone number requesting for customer payment over the phone and threatening that their power service will be disconnected if they don’t pay.
GPA advises the public that GPA employees do not initiate or make phone calls to customers to request for immediate payments over the telephone. Nor do they threaten power service disconnection.
“Calls have been received from a Donald Roberts from GPA from an off-island telephone number ‘011-888-728-9218’ requesting payments and threatening disconnection of power services,” GPA stated in a news release.
GPA General Manager John Benavente said: “The public should use every caution when contacted by anyone claiming to work for GPA and requesting payment or that their service will be disconnected if payment is not made immediately. Be very cautious when dealing with unknown callers or persons claiming to represent GPA to collect payment and always report any unusual or unprofessional behavior to the authorities.”
