GRMC mourns passing of Dr. Augusto Sarmiento, surgeon and co-founder of The Medical City

Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) joins our family at The Medical City in expressing our deepest sorrow at the passing of Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at the age of 96.

Dr. Sarmiento was a co-founder of our parent company, The Medical City in the Philippines and member of the GRMC board.

Dr. Sarmiento enjoyed a distinguished career as an internationally recognized Oncologic Surgeon. He is considered one of the top surgical oncologists in the Philippines, specializing in head and neck surgery. Dr. Sarmiento was awarded Most Outstanding Oncology distinction from the Philippine Society of Oncology and Legend of the Knife of the Philippine College of Surgeons in 2012.

Dr. Sarmiento trained as a resident in the Department of Obstetrics at the prestigious University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) and where he eventually rose to the level of Associate Professor of Surgery. After completing four years of specialized surgical training in the United States, Dr. Sarmiento returned to the Philippines to start his own private practice, concentrating on general and cancer surgery at the ABM Sison Medical Group Clinic and at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

In 1975, Dr. Sarmiento and a group of colleagues founded The Medical City, which has become the most prosperous and recognized healthcare network of hospitals in the Philippines.

“The contributions Dr. Sarmiento has made to improving healthcare in the Philippines, as both a surgeon and mentor to upcoming doctors, is immeasurable,” said GRMC President/CEO Michael Cruz, M.D.

“His passing is a great loss to his family, the Philippine medical community, and to his many patients who trusted in Dr. Sarmiento’s surgical expertise and knowledge. We will mourn him greatly.”
