GRMC Open Heart Surgeries On Hold as They Search for Heart Team

Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Noel Concepcion is on a mission to complete a heart surgery team for GRMC.

Guam – Open heart surgeries at the Guam Regional Medical City have been temporarily suspended as they continue their search for a complete heart team.

The hospital announced in a press release that GRMC’s cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Noel Concepcion will be taking a leave of absence in order to concentrate on the development of a sustainable heart surgery program for GRMC.

In December last year, Dr. Concepcion performed four successful open heart surgeries. However, he has not been able to perform any more open heart operations because he lacks the complete team to do so.

At the time of the open heart surgeries, Dr. Concepcion was joined by a visiting cardiothoracic surgeon.

GRMC says Dr. Concepcion is hoping to recruit a second permanent cardiothoracic surgeon, a cardiac anesthesiologist and other specialists.

GRMC says Dr. Concepcion will continue to return to Guam on a monthly basis as needed.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Noel Concepcion has taken a leave of absence in order to concentrate on the development of a sustainable heart surgery program for GRMC.

Since returning to Guam last October to lead the GRMC Cardiovascular team, Dr. Concepcion has successfully completed 4 open heart surgeries, significantly advancing the level of cardiac care on island. However in order to maintain that advanced level of care on a long term basis, additional medical personnel are needed. His goal is to recruit another cardiothoracic surgeon and a cardiac anesthesiologist, among other specialists.

Dr. Concepcion remains on the GRMC staff and will retain all of his hospital privileges. During his off-island recruitment drive he expects to return to Guam monthly, as needed.  He will continue to provide consultations and support to the 3 other cardiologists on the GRMC Cardiovascular team, Dr. Aravind Sekhar, Dr. Marian Holland, and Dr. Umair Yousufi.

Dr. Sekhar is an interventional cardiologist who specializes in the use of catheters to clear blocked arteries through the insertion of stents. Dr. Holland’s expertize lies in treating irregular heart rhythms by implanting devices like pacemakers.  Dr. Yousufi is a Pediatric Cardiologist who cares for children with congenital and acquired heart conditions.

Dr. Concepcion grew up on Guam and graduated from Father Duenas Memorial High School before moving on to earn his medical degree at the University of Hawaii and launching a distinguished career as a cardiovascular surgeon in California where he practiced for 28 years.
