Guahan Academy Charter School Board of Trustees is pleased to announce Guam’s first approved charter school will open as planned for School Year 2013-2014 in its new campus in Tiyan.
“After searching for a facility for the last three years, we couldn’t be happier to have found a place for our school,” says Charter School Director and Board of Trustee member, Donna Dwiggins.
An Invitation for Proposals (IFP) was published in February of this year in an effort to seek out facilities best suited for the charter school. The school received two responses, one of which was from Core Tech, with facilities in Tiyan. After careful review, the Board of Trustees officially selected the Tiyan campus this week.
“It’s a good day for education on Guam,” says Dwiggings. “I want to thank the parents who registered with us two years ago and patiently stood by us awaiting for this day to arrive. I want to thank our Board of Trustees, Governor Eddie Calvo and his staff at the Governor’s office, Senator Aline Yamashita for her diligence, Speaker Judy Won Pat, the Charter School Council and the many others who helped us over the last three years.”
The Guahan Academy Charter School is a non-profit organization and the first approved charter school on Guam. The Charter School charter also incorporates a Literacy Academy, a program, focusing on preparing students for high school and life by math and reading levels and comprehension skills. The charter school employs a mastery learning model and a national standards-based curriculum, assuring that high school graduates are prepared with skills to be successful in a variety of career paths. The school was formed by a group of educators and parents interested in an alternative to the traditional public school.
The Guahan Academy Charter School is currently in the process of registering students from K-8th grade for the upcoming school year (SY 2013-2014).
