Local artist TANYA JAE won big at the 2021 San Diego Music Awards. PNC had the pleasure of discussing the process leading up to the win with fellow musicians and owners of New Waves Studios.
More often than not, it is common that stories of success are told of thriving musicians. As a result, music consumers and critics alike have a front-row seat at the stage of a musician’s triumph, often unaware of the hard work and dedication poured into their journey leading up to the accolades and praise.
PNC had the opportunity to learn of local artist Tonyajae’s story, leading to her recent win at the 2021 San Diego Music Awards.
Tonyajae, originally from the village of Hågat, has been crafting her skills as a singer-songwriter from a very young age. When recalling her earliest memories of sharing her music with others, she reminisced about performing and winning four awards in her middle school’s music showcase.
From there, Tonyajae continued to hone her musical abilities, writing songs accompanied by her guitar. Then, in 2018, a single line played over in Tonya’s head, which served as the inspiration behind her hit love song, “Leave the House.”
“I wrote this song in 2018, it’s a love song. I wrote the song in an unconventional way because I didn’t have a love interest at the time. When I was falling asleep and started writing on my guitar, I was thinking the first line, “We don’t have to leave the house— then I thought, why do we have to leave the house— it was finding that why,” she said.
Tonyajae’s talent was quickly recognized by fellow musicians and owners of New Waves Studios Raymond Barcinas, Rajiv Daryanani, and producers E-man and Carlo V, who helped bring Tonya’s art to life, later deciding to release “Leave the House” as her first project.
Musicians Raymond Barcinas and Rajiv Daryanani, the owners of New Waves Studios, praised TonyaJae.
“I wanted to get her going on her own track, of her releasing something solo—without me or anyone on it. I wanted to introduce her to the world and the whole creative process took a while. But she (Tonyajae) was so firm in what she wanted. I knew getting the pieces together to create what she wanted So we had a friend of ours … E-MAN …. who came in to produce the beat and Carlo. He mixed and mastered the trackback and it came out beautifully,” Barcinas said.
The culmination of Tonyajae and New Waves Studios collaboration paid off at the 2021 San Diego Music Awards, which later went on to win in the category of best pop song.
Both Tonyajae and New Wave Studios say that this win is not only for them but for Guam’s entire island, and they hope to inspire and foster Guam’s future artists.
