Guam Joins Largest Earthquake Drill in U.S. History On 10/21

Guam- “Duck, Cover, and Hold on” for the Great Guam ShakeOut!

This first annual exercise is being held on October 21 at 10:21 am and is meant for people to practice how to protect themselves during earthquakes. Guam will be joining the nation and other countries in the biggest earthquake drill in United States history. Office of Civil Defense Administrator Chuck Ada says he encourages everyone to participate and practice identifying safety spots in the event an earthquake disaster does occur.

“One of the things we like to encourage folks is to develop safety spots” said Ada. “Safety spots are areas that we utilize during earthquakes which are free from falling hazards. So you would pre-identify safety spots in around your home, work place or some of the traditional places you go.”

Over 17,500 participants on island have signed up for the event, including 29 schools. Ada adds that the exercise also will be a great opportunity to activate and test their Emergency Alert System (EAS). For more information on the Great Guam ShakeOut or to participate, log on to .
