Guam Participates in “Kick Butts Day”; Territory Leads U.S. in Highest Rate of Adult Tobacco Use

Guam- Guam is participating in Kick Butts Day, a national event where thousands of young people in every state and territory “Stand Out, Speak Up and Seize Control Against Big Tobacco.”

The University of Guam and public health students are teaming up for kick butts day at the Guam Premier Outlets (GPO) with displays on the impact of the tobacco industry. Pre-nursing student Charleen Hadap says recent statistics show Guam leads the United States in having the highest rate of adult tobacco use. In fact, one person dies from tobacco use every day on the island and 60% of cancers are due to tobacco. Statistics also show a increase in local middle school children using tobacco products. While she encourages people to never start, Hadap also agrees it’s a hard habit to stop without support.

“There are ways to stop smoking” said Hadap. “And if they would come and take a look at our area, we provide pamphlets and provide many options to show there are ways. You’re not alone.”

The public is welcome to check out the Kick Butts display until 8 p.m. tonight. For more information on this national campaign, log on to .
