Guam Rugby On Verge Of World Recognition


Guam- Since the inception of rugby on the island, the sport has a seen a constant growth. And now Guam rugby in on the cusp of challenging the best teams in the world.

This weekend the Guam National Sevens Rugby team will be traveling to Malaysia for an upcoming tournament in Kota Kinabalu. Should Guam place seventh or better in this competition the team is looking at an invitation to the Hong Kong Sevens tournament, which is considered the flagship tournament of the International Rugby Board, and the stage for the rugby world’s elite. New Zealand, Fiji, England, Australia and France are some of the teams that participate in the event.

Coach Willie Heteraka mentioned that the team has been training and practicing six days a week for this tournament with the knowledge that being prepared will help you move forward.

Guam’s chances of ranking seventh or better in the coming tournament is not a long shot. In Guam’s most recent tournament, the Asian Rugby Sevens Series, Guam had an entry rank 12 but finished the series ranked sixth, outranking the Philippines, India, Chinese-Taipei, Sri Lanka and Thailand. These are some of the teams that Guam will be facing in Kota Kinabalu. Guam actually only has to win one game in the coming weekend for the prestigious invitation.
