Guam – Today is World Health Day and Guam is not an exception to the international celebration.

Since Guam is a day ahead, the Department of Public Health and Social Services will be holding their World Health Day event tomorrow. According to the World Health Organization’s website, their goal for World Health Day this year is to increase awareness about the rise in diabetes, trigger effective and affordable actions to tackle diabetes, and launch the first global report on diabetes.DPHSS Live Healthy Guam Program Coordinator Pat Luces says on

DPHSS Live Healthy Guam Program Coordinator Pat Luces says on island, throughout the entire month, the department has been reaching out the community with the diabetes strategic planning and blood glucose screening. Tomorrow, however, Luces says they will be holding a World Health Day event with free work-out classes, entertainment, raffle drawings and more.

He explains why it’s important to get the community involved in WHD. “The main is actually really for our health. Our health is our wealth. It’s really important that we encourage our community to at least do a 30-60 minute exercise a day. We do see a high number of obesity rates among children, which is about 21% and for adults of over 63%. We see that there is a relation to diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer so it’s very important to encourage our community and come out as a family,” says Luces.

The World Health Day event will take place tomorrow at the Dededo Sports Complex from 4 to 6 pm.
