Guam – The Guam Under-16 men’s national team lost their opening match 4-1 to Hong Kong yesterday in Group G the AFC Under-16 Championship 2012 Qualifying Round held in Bangkok, Thailand.
After two late goals handed Guam a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in the same competition two years ago, Hong Kong took the upper hand earlier this time with a goal from Brian Liu in the 15th minute. Liu added a second in the 38th minute to give Hong Kong a 2-0 halftime lead.
Substitute Philip Wong scored the third just seven minutes after the break before Matthew Orr completed the Hong Kong tally on the hour mark. Guam’s Donovan Reyes made sure his team didn’t leave empty handed with a goal in the 89th minute.
Despite the loss, Guam displayed a vast improvement over the 16-2 loss they suffered against Hong Kong in July’s EAFF Under-15 Tournament in Chinese Taipei.
In other Group G matches, Thailand defeated Australia 3-2 and Indonesia won 4-1 over Myanmar.
The teams have a rest day today and will play their second round of matches tomorrow. Guam will play Thailand at 3 p.m. (6 p.m. Guam time) while the Australia/Myanmar and Indonesia/Hong Kong matches both kick off at 6 p.m. (9 p.m. Guam time).
