Guam – Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) Marketing Manager Pilar Laguaña has accepted an invitation by the National Tour Association (NTA) to serve as chairwoman of the organization’s 2011 Leadership Committee China Task Force.
The move comes at a time when the number of Chinese visitors to the United States has jumped a record 57% to date this fiscal year over 2009, according to statistics compiled by the Office of Travel & Tourism Industries, International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. About 525,000 visitors have accounted for more than $3.6 billion in spending within U.S. destinations.

“This is great news, as it will put Ms. Laguaña on the front lines of updates regarding China, and how other North American destinations are addressing the increase in Chinese visitors,” said GVB General Manager Gerald S.A. Perez. “Our goal with this task force is to learn from others how we can have good quality control in presenting the destination to outbound visitors, and bridge relationships with travel trade in China.”

The invitation came from NTA Chairman & CEO Cathy Greteman, who has previously worked with Laguaña during her term on the NTA 2010 Leadership Team and during her tenure on the International Advisory Task Force.

“Based on the MOU between the United States and China, Chinese leisure travel to the U.S. is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years, and NTA’s Task Force is charged with market education, business-to-business facilitation between U.S. and Chinese tour operators, enhancing the standards for Chinese leisure travel and pursuing ways to ease visa processes for Chinese citizens,” said NTA President Lisa Simon. “Guam is not only an attractive destination for Chinese travelers, but under Laguaña’s leadership has become a catalyst for improving the experience for Chinese visitors to US destinations. “
