Guam – Marten Lai and Katie Lai continues to serve up winners as both claimed the men and women’s Open Champion titles in the Haagen Dazs 39th Chamorro Open Tennis Classic held this past weekend. Not to be outdone by his children, father Sam Lai battled in a three hour long three setter match to clinch the Men’s 4.5 Champion title.
Other juniors stepped up to dominate the tournament as well. According the Joe Cepeda, tournament director, “of the eight skilled divisions, five were won by juniors”. In addition to Marten (18) and Katie Lai (15), there is Derek Okuhama (12)In the Men’s 3.0 division ; Joshua Cepeda (14) in the Men’s 4.0 division; and Ashley Nadler(16) in the Women’s 3.0 division.
The Chamorro Open is the Guam National Tennis Federation’s signature tournament held annually in March and April. This year’s tournament attracted over 130 participants, with matches played over three venues. This year’s tournament is sponsored by Haagen Dazs.
The Chamorro Open continues this weekend with the Junior and Aged Singles events.
