Hong Kong’s Lam Topples Two Seeded Players in ITF Juniors Event

Guam – Hong Kong’s Ching Lam outplayed No. 6 Shinnosuke Hiramatsu of Japan 6-3, 6-3 to advance as the lone unseeded semifinalist in the boys’ singles draw of the Calvo’s SelectCare Junior Championship at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa tennis courts.

Lam, who also toppled No. 3 Jesse Delaney of Australia Wednesday, will next play No. 7 Leo Vithoontien of Thailand, who prevailed with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over qualifier Yuga Tashiro of Japan.

In the top half of the draw, No. 1 Taisei Miyamoto dropped nine games, but managed to outlast qualifier Donghwi Shin of Korea Republic 6-4, 7-5 to move into the semifinals. Miyamoto will next play No. 4 Jack Barber of the United States, who held on to prevent a third set against Japan’s Tomoki Ota, 6-0, 7-6(1).

In the girls’ singles draw, the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals. No. Yinglak Jittakoat of Thailand defeated Japan’s Yuki Fujiwara 6-2, 6-0 and will next play No. 4 Satoko Sueno of Japan. Sueno defeated compatriot Ramu Ueda 6-2, 6-4. No. 2 Eun Se Jang of Korea Republic defeated Chinese Taipei’s Sing-Le Fan Chiang 6-0, 6-2 and will next face No. 3 Mai Hontama of Japan, a 6-3, 6-1 winnover over No. 6 Gabriella Da Silva Fick of Australia.

In boys’ doubles action, No. 1 Jack Barber of the United States and Chak Yin Chan of Hong Kong punched their ticket to the final with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Japan’s Taisei Miyamoto and Yuki Watanabe. Also in the final is the No. 2 seeded Australian tandem of Benard Bruno Nkomba and Kody Pearson, 4-6, 1-0 (retired) winners over Japan’s Tomohiro Masabayashi and Daisuke Sumizawa.

In girls’ doubles play, No. 3 Satoko Sueno and Yukiho Uragami of Japan, 7-5, 0-6, 10-5 winners over Australia’s Gabriella Da Silva Fick and Millie Khoury, will face Nagomi Higashitani and Mai Homtama of Japan in the division final. Higashitani/Hontama defeated another Japanese pair, Asumi Kanazawa and Kanako Ota 6-2, 6-4 for a finals berth.

In Thursday morning consolation matches, Guam’s Nadine del Carmen defeated Japan’s Yuka Hashimoto 4-2, 4-0 at the Hyatt Regency Guam tennis courts. Palau’s Ayana Rengiil defeated Japan’s Wakaba Sato 4-2, 4-0 and Kanako Ota of Japan defeated compatriot Maine Hiramatsu 4-0, 4-0. Japan’s Asumi Kanazawa defeated Guam’s Margaux San Nicolas 4-1, 4-0.

Matches continue Friday, with the final matches for both boys’ and girls’ singles draws scheduled for Saturday. The updated draw and order of play is posted at the Hilton tennis courts clubhouse.
