Guam – The Simpkins family presented a check of $10,000 Thursday to the Guam Healthcare and Hospital Development Foundation
The funds will be used for the purpose of funding cancer related community outreach and education programs.
A release from Guam Healthcare & Hospital Development Foundation President Peter Sgro states that Roxanne Simpkins-Williams, Sheryl Simpkins and Robert Simpkins Jr., together with their staff, presented the $10,000 check to the Foundation in honor of their father, the late Robert E. Simpkins Sr., who passed away from cancer sixteen years ago. The family are the owners of Guam Memorial Park, Inc., Guam Memorial Life Plan, Inc. and Guam Memorial Funeral Home.
Since the Foundation first began, it has sponsored at no cost to those participating, over fourteen conferences and continues community outreach programs including “LIVE PSA LONG,” which is a prostate cancer awareness campaign focused on educating the community about early detection relative to prostate cancer, one of the leading cancers that affect men on Guam.
According to research by the University of Guam Cancer Research Center, every week four men and three women on Guam are diagnosed with some form of cancer. The incidences of cancer in men has decreased by a slight margin on the mainland from 2003 to 2007, while the incidence of cancer in men on Guam rose by 22%. During the same time period, the mortality rate of men on Guam because of cancer rose by 100%.
“Our family has observed the work of this Foundation and are truly grateful for what they do for our community,“ said Sheryl Simpkins, Board member and Vice-President of Guam Memorial Park, Inc.and Guam Memorial Life Plans, Inc. “We trust in their vision, we trust in their goals and we have grown to recognize that what they do for Guam is not easy,” added Simpkins. “We wanted to support this effort and applaud them for what they do and for how they professionally do it, in helping to make a better Guam for all of us,” concluded Simpkins.
