Guam – In the final minute of the game, the Strykers’ Devin Hua had the ball in his possession and saw a clear path to the goal.
Hua powered in a clutch goal to break a 2-2 tie and lift his team, 3-2, against the ASC Islanders in a U14 match of the Cars Plus Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League Saturday at the Guam Football Association Harmon facility.
“Right before I kicked the ball, I just thought about my team winning,” Hua said. “When I saw my shot go in, I just felt really happy, knowing that my team had won the game.”
Hua’s leg had collided with a defender on the play immediately preceding the final whistle and his teammate had to assist him walk off the field to the rest of his elated team members. It was a tough ending for the Islanders, who led 2-0 for much of the game with goals from Devan Mendiola in the first half and Leon Bamba in the opening minutes of the second half.
The Strykers’ Austin Kaplan broke the scoring ice for his team almost midway into the second half, blasting his shot into the right corner of net past the Islanders’ Tanner Kukes. Moments later, Hua scored the equalizer on a shot that barely whizzed past Kukes, who had tried to block the shot by diving on the ground.
The Strykers won their opening match on the first weekend of the youth league, defeating the Kicker Sisters, Guam’s U13 girls’ national team, 3-0, in a friendly match.
The Islanders had better luck in its all girls’ league game, defeating Quality Distributors, 3-2 with goals from Krystiana Martinez, Aubrey Pangindian and Mia Santos. Quality earned its goals from Meliza Pama and Raven Aguon.
In other all-girls’ division matches, the two-time defending champion, Guahan Explosions suffered their first loss in two season, conceding a 5-2 match to the Samurai Heat. Ali Cruz scored two goals for Samurai and teammates Aubreyana Esteves, Jolleen Connelley and Hannah Tyquiengco added a goal each. The short-handed Explosions earned both of their goals from Ma. Abbey Iriarte.
