Ilao is GCC’s 2013 Distinguished Alumnus

Guam – Ed Ilao, president and CEO of Johndel International Inc., was named the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of Guam Community College on Monday.

Ilao graduated from GCC’s former Vocational and Technical High School in 1980 with emphasis in Technical Electronics.

“I am very honored by this award,” Ilao said. “GCC plays a crucial role in educating people with the skills they need to be competitive in Guam’s workforce. I am proud to be an alumni, and proud to continue my support for the mission of the College.”

For the past 26 years Ilao has been at the helm of Johndel International Inc., which offers products and services to the industrial, commercial, and medical industries serving Guam and the region. This year, the company was awarded the 2013 U.S. Small Business Administration’s Family-Owned Small Business Award for Guam. Ilao earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and is a licensed professional engineer in Guam, the CNMI and California. Ilao is a member of the Guam Chamber of Commerce, the Guam Contractors Association, and the Guam Hotel & Restaurant Association, and served on the GCC Board of Trustees from 2007 – 2011. He currently sits on the GCC Foundation Board of Governors and the Port Authority of Guam board. Also, he was a 3-year chairman and an 11-year board member of the American Red Cross, and has served on several other non-profit and community organizations.

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes graduates of the former GCC High School, or Guam Community College’s postsecondary, GED, licensure or apprentice programs, that have demonstrated the highest level of professional achievement and service to the community.

Ilao will join past Distinguished Alumni winners Dr. Kimberly Bersamin, Dr. Anita Borja Enriquez, Jeffrey John Ibanez, Mary English and Phil Ada in having his name, profession, and year of graduation engraved on a tile embedded in a prominent walkway on campus.

The Distinguished Alumni Award helps the college to reconnect with its over 10,000 alumni, promote special events and move forward with GCC initiatives. For more information on the award and on GCC’s Alumni Association, log onto
