Guam – Incoming Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez says education reform has to be a community effort.
Fernandez appeared on the K-57 Breakfast Show this morning, which was guest hosted by University of Guam President Dr. Robert Underwood. The two educational leaders discussed the importance of having solid leadership at DOE, which Fernandez said has had 21 different superintendents in the last 21 years.
The new superintendent says he’s happy to be a part of the Governor’s Education Reform Plan but emphasizes the importance of involving parents, teachers, principals and the business community.
“I’m eager to get to work and I think that thats what the key is. Its gonna take work, its gonna take hard work” Fernandez said. “I’m happy to come out there, lay out my vision for what I think we ought to be, where we ought to go, but that has to be a community vision if we’re gonna get anything done.”
Fernandez arrived on Guam last week and takes the lead at DOE on July 1st. He’ll relieve Deputy Superintendent Taling Taitano who has been serving as the Interim Superintendent since July of last year.
