In light of Governor Lou Leon Guerrero’s announcement of a return to Pandemic Condition of Readiness 3 (PCOR3), along with her authorization of no-contact sports competitions, Guam Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez announced that the GDOE Interscholastic Sports Association (ISA) is scheduled to begin its Block 1 season on Monday, March 1, 2021.

GDOE’s  “Return to Sport” guidelines have been submitted to the Department of Public Health and Social Services and is awaiting review and approval. Due to the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic on GDOE schools and interscholastic sports programs – including lower turnouts of athletes for organized sports as well as perhaps the inability to field full teams, GDOE is extending, on behalf of the ISA Board of Control, an invitation to for IIAAG teams and student-athletes to participate with ISA in the following leagues:

1) Boys and Girls Cross Country – ISA will be offering cross-country running for participating schools. Should any of IIAAG teams be interested in joining, they should
contact ISA League Director Al Garrido directly at algarrido@gdoe.net. Please notify
Mr. Garrido no later than Tuesday, February 23, so he can make the necessary
arrangements.

2) Boys and Girls Tennis – ISA will be offering Boys and Girls Tennis to participating schools. Should any IIAAG teams be interested in joining, they should
contact ISA League Director Al Garrido directly at algarrido@gdoe.net. Please notify
Mr. Garrido no later than Tuesday, February 23, so GDOE can make the necessary
arrangements.

3) Girls Softball – ISA had previously offered the opportunity for IIAAG teams to compete
in ISA for girls softball, and Guam High School and Academy of Our Lady of Guam have graciously accepted the invitation and are currently on the schedule. ISA looks
forward to their participation.

4) Boys and Girls Volleyball – ISA sent an invitation to IIAAG on January 15, 2021, inviting
two teams from IIAAG to participate in the Boys Volleyball league and two teams to
participate in the Girls Volleyball league. To date, no teams have responded. However, ISA is again extending the invitation. Should any of IIAAG teams be interested in joining, they should contact ISA League Director Al Garrido directly at algarrido@gdoe.net. Please notify Mr. Garrido no later than Tuesday, February 23, so ISA can make the necessary arrangements.

In the event that the IIAAG schools are unable to participate as an entire team, Fernandez said IIAAG student-athletes are welcome to affiliate with any ISA teams, subject to ISA affiliation rules.

“Thank you for giving this invitation your full consideration. We know that this year has been challenging for all of our schools and student-athletes, and in that spirit, we extend this invitation to do our part to help maximize the opportunities for our student-athletes to stay physically active and to enjoy healthy competition as we work to transition out of the current pandemic and begin the gradual reopening of our community, Fernandez said in a letter to the IIAAG.
