Island’s Catholic Faithful Gather at Church for Ash Wednesday

The Hagatna Cathedral Basicila was one of the crowded places where residents attended the special mass service during lunch time.

Guam – Today is Ash Wednesday, which marks the first day of lent.

Lent is a season of prayer and fasting leading up to Easter Sunday and is observed by hundreds of the island’s Catholic faithful. Many residents headed to mass at churches throughout the island to have ashes placed upon their foreheads as a symbol of repentance towards God. The ashes come from the blessed palms that are burned from last year’s Palm Sunday.
