Guam – The 49 ft Japanese fishing boat, Take Maru 55, ran aground yesterday morning off Melesso near the west coast of Cocos Island. The crew of 4 Filipinos and 2 Indonesians swam to Cocos Island and sought shelter in a building of the Cocos Island Resort.

At 6 AM this morning, Agat Fire and Rescue Department (GFD) responded to the distress call from the Take Maru crew and launched a boat to rescue the 6 fishermen. The GFD delivered the fishermen uninjured at Merizo pier at 8 AM. They are now being interviewed by the Guam Police Department to determine the cause of the boat’s grounding.

The US Coast Guard are unable to determine whether the boat is salvagable; due to high surf blocking the inspection by boat, and heavy rain and wind blocking the inspection by helicopter. The Coast Guard has been in contact with the owner of the boat to determine compensation.
