Joaquin Arriola Sr. to Receive Husticia Award

Hagåtña, Guam – (April 29) – The Judiciary of Guam, the United States District Court of Guam and the Guam Bar Association are pleased to announce that the 2014 Hustisia Award will be presented to attorney Joaquin C. Arriola, Sr., who has spent a long career in dedicated service to the people of Guam.

 

  The Hustisia Award is given annually, in conjunction with Law Week activities, to a recipient who has contributed to improving the administration of justice and good government.

Law Week is celebrated annually and is highlighted by Law Day, a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law, which occurs on May 1.  Law Day underscores how law and the legal process have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans share.  The 2014 theme, “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters,” draws attention to the importance of individual participation in our democratic system of governance.

Joaquin C. Arriola, Sr., whose legal career has spanned some 57 years, served as Speaker of the Ninth and Tenth Guam Legislatures.  He has additionally served as counsel to the Guam Legislature, Guam Power Authority and the Guam Economic Development Authority. Mr. Arriola has served as an Associate Justice pro tempore for the Guam Supreme Court and continues to be active in the practice of law as the founding partner of Arriola, Cowan & Arriola.   

Mr. Arriola is a graduate of George Washington High School, the College of Saint Thomas (now known as the University of Saint Thomas), and the law school at the University of Minnesota.  Mr. Arriola is a member of the Guam Bar Association (including having served as president from 1956-57), as well as the American, International, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Bar associations.  He is admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States District, Supreme, and Superior Courts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The Hustisia honor recognizes community members who have promoted respect for the law and an understanding of the judicial system, encouraged civic responsibility and service and volunteered time and talents to judicial system in serving the people of Guam.  Mr.  Arriola will be honored at a ceremony on Friday, May 2, 2014, at 3:00 pm at the Guam Judicial Center in conjunction with the swearing in of new members of the Guam Bar Association.
