Guam – July 20th will now be officially known as congenital diaphragmatic hernia day in honor of Teren Pia Alvarez Doyle.
The one year old girl was diagnosed with this very rare condition but has battled through it all enduring numerous surgeries. Little Pia was in the governor’s chambers this morning for the proclamation signing along with the rest of her family. Her mother Nerissa Alvarez Doyle wants to increase awareness about this rare congenital condition in which a hole in the diaphragm allows the abdominal organs to push into the chest cavity. The condition is life threatening for infants as it limits the growth of the lungs.
