Guam – Sunday was the highly anticipated Guam Koko Road Race. It’s one of the biggest sports tourism events on Guam and it brought out thousands of runners from around the island and beyond.
This year’s winner is also last year’s winner. Masashi Shirotake is this year’s Guam Koko Road Race winner. The Japanese runner bettered his run from last year by nine seconds at 1hr, 12 min, 43 sec.
Local runner Brandon Fell was the fastest runner from Guam and was only two minutes behind Shirotake.
The run is to bring attention to the plight of the Guam’s National Bird, the Koko bird. Over the years the run has grown bigger and is now a relay race and half marathon.
This year’s race also featured a new timing system that involves a chip that takes the times of runners and should ease the burden of race officials in future events.
