Guam is now 2-1 in the Asia Insurance Phoenix Cup, an international women’s baseball tournament in its 9th year.

HONG KONG – After losing to #4 world ranked Australia in their first game 12-0, Lady Guahan shook the jitters of international competition, and came back to beat Singapore 19-0. Lady Guahan finished 2nd in their pool.

Persistent rain Friday night washed out much of Saturday’s games.

On Sunday, after games were rescheduled, Lady Guahan not only faced a tough Korean opponent, but had to fight the elements with low temperatures and blustery wind making the windchill in the 40s. The bats of Lady Guahan remained hot however and Guam’s National Women’s Baseball Team prevailed with a 14-3 victory.

Lady Guahan Manager Pat Fejeran commented “My 2 youngest players, Sirena Cepeda and Megan Maritita are doing a great job in their starting roles”. An injury to starting shortstop Tamisha Fejeran forced Cepeda to play shortstop, while Tamisha Fejeran moved to catcher. Manager P. Fejeran continued by saying “Sirena is our leadoff batter and Megan is our clean up batter, number 4 in the line up”.

In the win against Korea, Cepeda was 2-3 with a walk, scored 3 runs, had a run batted in, and a stolen base. Maritita also was 2-3, scored 2 runs, had a run batted in and a stolen base. Ashley Cruz added 3 stolen bases to the Lady Guahan offensive explosion while going 2-2 with a walk, 2 runs and 2 runs batting in. Merced Flores was 2-3 with a walk, 2 runs scored, 2 runs batted in and a stolen base. And Tamisha Fejeran playing injured was 2-4, scoring 2 runs and 2 runs batted in.

The pitching duty has been mainly performed by Merced Flores and Pauly Quintanilla. “Quintanilla has done an outstanding job pitching” Pat Fejeran says. Appearing in 2 games, Quintanilla has pitched 7 innings, earning 2 wins, while giving up just 3 hits, and only 1 earned run.

Up next for Lady Guahan, a game that will determine 5th place, against an experienced Taiwan team who has been playing together for a number of years in the Taiwan Women’s Baseball League. Gametime is 11am Guam time.

Finally, Manager Pat Fejeran says “I would like to thank my coaching staff: Head Coach Coby Barnes, Pete Taimanglo, Eric Cepeda and most especially General Manager (Auntie) Lil Quintanilla who have all helped out tremendously in preparing for and during this tournament”.
