Number 1 Seeds Win First Round Of Latte Baseball

Guam – First seed Philip & Son’s Phillies matched up with the Piti Pirates who had won the play-in game to earn a spot in the playoffs.  The 8 seed Pirates came out ready to play the first few innings getting on the board in the first inning off one of Guam’s best Phillie’s starter Eric Cepeda.

A lead off single by Brian Santos and a error by the Phillies gave the Pirates a early 1-0 lead.  Pirate’s starter Jay Cing looked on his game the first two innings retiring the Phillies to hold the 1-0 lead going into the 3rd inning.  The #1 seed Phillies came out in the 3rd inning a big 6 run inning.  Doubles by KC Cruz and JD San Nicolas helped spark the rally although only 2 of the 6 runs were earned.

The Phillies would add a run in the 4th with a lead off double by Raf Chavez and rbi single by Scott San Nicolas giving the Phillies a 8-1 lead through 4 innings.

The Phillies pitching rotations of Cepeda, Matanane, Babauta and San Nicolas was too touch for the Pirates, allowing only 4 hits for the game.  The Phillies would hold on for a 10-1 win.

Phillies KC Cruz was 2-2 with a double, 1 run, rbi and stolen base.  Raf Chavez was 2-2 with 2 doubles and 2 runs.  Eric Cepeda picked up the win going 4 innings with 5 K’s, 1 walk and no earned runs allowed.  The Pirates Jay Cing was solid on the mound going 4 inning with 3 K’s in picking up the loss.  The Phillies advance to the Elite 8 where the play the winner of the Chiefs(5) and Cardinals(4).

The late night matchup between the 8th seed Inarajan Gadaos and 1st seed AM Insurance Angels proved to be a great game.  The Gadaos finished the regular season in last place in the Ifit division with a 3-7 record but looking at their roster full of experienced players you know immediately they werent playing to their potential.  The playoffs is when big time players are supposed to step up and the Gadaos and Angels didnt dissapoint.

After a short delay in the game to remove an ineligible player in the Gadaos lineup the game quickly became one of the best of the season.  The Gadaos started the scoring first against the Angel’s Freddy Cepeda.  John Pangelinan lead off the 2nd with a single and would score on a infield rbi groundout by Lance Mantanona.  In the 3rd inning the Gadaos got to Cepeda again with a single by Corey Montanona, Miller Santos got on by a error and then John Pangelinan stroked a long 2rbi double to left staking the Gadaos to an early 3-0 lead over the Angels.

The Angels would answer immediately in the bottom of the 3rd capitalizing on Gadaos errors and then scoring on a 2rbi single by Matt Muna.  The Angels would again taking advantage of poor Gadaos defense to push a run across to tie the game up at 3-3.  Both teams pitching was superb with the Gadaos starter Corey Montanona throwing 4 solid innings with 4 K’s, 2 BB, only 1 hit and 1 earned run allowed.  The Phillies Freddy Cepeda was almost as good with 4 innings, 5 K’s, 3 hits and 3 earned runs allowed.  RJ Joe would come in to relieve for the Angels and was lights out as he has been all season.  Over the last three innings of the game Joe would notch 4 K’s, allow only 2 walks and no hits to keep the Angel’s in the ballgame.

Tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the 7th the Angels needed a run to win the game.  Infield singles by both Shon Muna Jr and Ryan Martinez would get the Angels in scoring position and big Matt Muna would cap a 2-3, 3 rbi night with a game winning walk off rbi single through the right side of the infield to give the Angels a hard fought win 4-3!  A absolutely great game start to finish.  RJ Joe picks up the win for the Angels who advance to the Elite 8 where the play the winner of the Rebels(5) and Gamecocks(4).
