Local Cultural Dance Group Inetnon Gefpågo to Compete in Europe

Inetnon Gefpågo, the award-winning program whose mission is to promote awareness and pride in Chamorro heritage through performance arts, will be heading to Europe in a couple of weeks to compete in two major World Folkdance Competitions!

The group will be participating in the 16th International Buyukcekmece Culture and Art Festival in Istanbul Turkey and then they’ll be headed to the 32nd edition of the International Folk Festival “Carparti 2015” in Romania. This is Inetnon Gefpågo’s second time participating in the invite-only competitions and will be one of the 30 participating countries.

National Folkdance Director and Master of Chamorro Dance Vince Reyes says they’re excited to share the uniqueness or Guam’s heritage through dance to the rest of the world. He says, “We are just excited to be able to be given this opportunity. Definitely, standing tall next to other cultures is something we treasure so the artistic integrity as well as the integrity of our people we must carry with us. If we’re going to be up against countries like Brazil, China and Mexico, we definitely have to represent our island to the fullest.”

A couple of performers tell us what they’re most excited about. Brandon Fujisawa says, “Just getting on that plane and being halfway around the world and experiencing everything, soaking in everything.” Vance Camacho says, “Also to experience other people’s cultures and learning how people act in different ways and how they are as people.”

In preparation for their trip, the group will be having send-off shows this Saturday at the UOG Fine Arts Theater at 2 pm and 7 pm. It’s $10 for general admission. For more information, contact Theresa Camacho at 787-2760 for tickets.
