A life was lost in an early morning single-car crash on the back road to Andersen. Police say the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole.

Around 1 a.m. Thursday morning, an unidentified man lost control of his vehicle on Route 15 in Yigo. Police Spokesman Sgt. Paul Tapao says that when officers arrived they found a white sedan crashed into the concrete power pole.

“A lifeless male was found within the car … at which time our officers proceeded to activate GPD’s Highway Patrol Division. Subsequent to finding the lifeless male operator, he was transported by GFD medics to the GMH morgue. No other life-saving measures were performed from the site of the crash to the hospital,” Tapao said

This is the eighth traffic-related fatality for the island this year. Tapao says this is concerning as it’s only been four months since the beginning of the year. He adds that this is one of the many reasons GPD has stepped up its speed and DWI enforcement efforts. In fact, DWI checkpoints will begin this evening.

“As with all investigations we have to wait for an autopsy to be conducted by the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death,” Tapao said.

Tapao says they are waiting for the results of the autopsy and toxicology reports to determine if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. He adds that they are also waiting for autopsy results from the Asan fatal crash and the pedestrian accident in Agana.
